No- he said what he meant. All men. He didn’t think blacks would ever have the audacity to declare themselves men. To Jefferson, that would be akin to having his work mule declare equality. No need to distinguish something that’s an ‘impossibility’, which is the true depth of the disregard he had for the humanity of blacks.
U racist crap
I’m not sure if it’s that simple.
James A, those who make assumptions about history are often wrong and in this case you are wrong. Jefferson fought to allow slave owners the right to free their slaves because he wanted to free his but was prevented by Virginia law.
I cannot reconcile his glorious words “All Men are created equal,” with his practice of slavery. I cannot even reconcile, Jefferson’s practice of the repeated rape of Sally Hemmings. All of this country’s founding fathers were flawed men. Trapped by the times, trapped by economics, trapped by ego. TJ was a debtor (the Library of Congress was founded by purchasing Jefferson’s personal library so he could pay off his debts), he promulgated lies through proxies about his best friend John Adams to win the presidential election of 1800, he opposed federalism then made the Louisiana Purchase, and maybe worst he advocated for the American Revolution, but not only didn’t fight he ran when it came to his front door – literally his front door. I could go on about TJ’s flaws. And yet, he made many, many significant contributions. Albert Einstein and JFK were serial womanizers. Gandhi slept with young children. Henry Ford was anti-Semitic. Even Peter denied Christ three times before the rooster crowed in the morning. The question in my mind is, “How do we weigh the pros and cons of any man or woman – particularly the great ones?”
He meant all white men are created equal.
Thomas Jefferson was a lowlife who made slave out of his own children that he had by slave.
During this period Black people, aka Slaves were not considered as people but savages or 1/5 of a white man!! So how could he make concession that included AFRICAN AMERICANS.. This sentiment continue to resignates in 2020!! Very Sad!! He slept with them, fathrred9 children but NEVER DECLARED THEM HIS EQUAL NOR ANY OTHER PERSON OF COLOR!!!!
Jefferson introduced several bills in the Virginia state legislature to allow slave owners to free their slaves but none of those bills got passed. It was illegal for slave owners to free their slaves in Virginia and Jefferson fought against that law because he wanted to free his slaves.
I believe he had foreseen for back then what we’re witnessing now but the fear of being beaten with no where to go due to unbidled treachery and the overwhelming tide of hatred blacks just didn’t get on top of their Business.
He didn’t love her. He raped her repeatedly!! What choice could she have possibly had?!
The very idea to force a human being to work for nothing is appalling in itself. But to regard the Forced Human Being as inferior is just Pure Hatred!!!
The finished version that is in place was not what Jefferson originally wrote. Yes, he was a slave owner; he was a product of his time.
Product of his time and that made it right or justify the horror many African had to endure and still have to put of with in this decade.. unbelievable
He wasn’t shit other than a pig head bigoted racist who will be judged in hell!!!!
SO IF EVERYONE IS JUMPING OFF BRIDGES IMMA JUMP TOO? IT TAKES A LOT OF COURAGE TO ACCEPT TRUTH AND OFT TIMES A PERSON HAS TO RISE TO THAT LEVEL.
